Job Description
OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT
 
Responsibilities
The Ophthalmic Assistant directly supports the physician during patient examinations. Primary responsibilities include documenting diagnosis, treatment and medical findings in the medical record.
 
Supervision
The Ophthalmic Assistant will report directly to the Nursing Supervisor. No supervision of other employees is required.
 
Performance Criteria
 
Competency A: Proficiency in Essential Functions
 
1. Monitor physician patient schedule.
2. Open and close exam lanes and starting rooms.
3. Stock exam lanes and replenish supplies as necessary.
4. Basic equipment maintenance in exam lanes.
5. Obtain and record concisely patient history following documentation guidelines.
6. Obtain visual acuity and record.
7. Perform confrontation visual fields.
8. Sort and label fundus and/or external photos.
9. Perform automated visual fields, corneal topography, laser tomography, and axial length measurements.
10. Document CPT and ICD diagnosis and modifiers as appropriate. Be sure documentation guidelines are adhered to accordingly.
11. Perform medical record audits.
12. Document physician’s findings in the patient medical record including diagnosis, follow up appointment, and signature.
13. Assist physician with eye examinations and minor procedures
14. Act as a liaison between the physician and the patient. Assist the physician in assembling charts for daily dictation and return patient phone calls.
15. Assist in scheduling patients for test procedures done outside the office (i.e. CT scan MRI, laboratory etc.).
16. Document charges on the encounter form as directed by physician.
17. Educate patients on specific issues as directed by physician
18. Clean equipment (i.e. tonometer tips, gonio lens) between patients and rooms
19. Perform daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance of autoclave. Conduct spore tests as necessary.
20. Sterilization of instruments.
21. Stock rooms with all supplies as per list.
22. Order supplies as necessary.
23. Maintain compliance with OSHA standards.
24. Maintain compliance with HIPPA standards.
25. Maintain compliance with Willcockson Eye Associates P.C. Compliance Plan.
26. Seek out additional responsibilities as necessary.
27. Other responsibilities as assigned by Nursing Supervisor.

Qualifications
High School Diploma required
College courses preferred
Medical Terminology preferred
 
Working Conditions
The Ophthalmic Assistant works in the clinical setting that is well ventilated and lighted and may occasionally experience stress.
 
Physical Requirements:
1. Adequate corrected hearing and visual acuity to perform the essential functions of the job.
2. Must be able to clearly speak and comprehend English. Must have the ability to read and follow instructions and the ability to communicate in one-on-one and small group situations.
3. Occasionally must be able to lift 50-100 pounds or more. Must ask for assistance when lifting more than 50 lbs.
4. Work sitting and standing with frequent walking and bending.
5. Reasonable probability to come in contact with blood borne pathogens.
